NOLA Ex-Pats...a second line home (posted by GriffinNola)
After moving to LA post Katrina it was important for all (us) refugees to reconnect. What missed was the music. Being together, dancing to horns, and drinking more than we should. Over the years the Mint has become a the LA stop for New Orleans bands & ex-pats alike being dubbed the 'Maple Leaf on the Left Coast.' Trombone Shorty, Rebirth, Stanton Moore, Dumpstaphunk, Tab Benoit, George Porter Jr, Big Sam, Bonerama, Dirty Dozen, Leo Nocentelli, Cowboy Mouth, ...the list goes on & on. Many thanks to the NOLA community for sticking together, and the Mint for giving us a 2nd home away from home.

Great atmosphere!
The music provided on a nightly basis is eclectic and of the utmost quality no matter what genre is being presented. The food is second to none. You looking for dinner and a show? You've come to the right place!

P.S. May I recommend the taquitos or mac n cheese?

Rich Spirit, Solid Sound, Great Grub
The Mint is a local live music jewel, offering national touring artists and local artists 7 nights/week. It is the hub of the Los Angeles roots/americana, modern troubadour, New Orleans music scenes, but does delve into other genres. In contrast to many small venues locally, The Mint also offers a delectable dining menu that rises above mere bar bites. You can feel the rich history of legends-past in the walls, and will likely be swept up into jovial dance on the floor. While it is steeped in history, it is also up to the times, with sweet Foursquare and Facebook check-in offers that you can take advantage of every time you visit, and in combo with each other, to score food and bev deals. Parking is cake. Park for free in the streets all around the club. Easy peezy good times with good people. The Mint does a lot of ticket giveaways/promos. Just follow them on twitter/facebook and sign up for the newsletter on the website http://themintla.com.

Things Must Have Changed
I had read the previous reviews and was a little skeptical about going to The Mint. I shouldn't have been. The show was standing room only and because of a chronic back problem, I can't stand up for four hours straight. I thought I was going to have to pass on going, but my date called and asked them to reserve a bar stool for me, which they did. When we arrived, they had reserved an entire table for us, knew our names and introduced themselves! They couldn't have been nicer. Same goes for the wait staff. Very sweet, very attentive.

The only thing that wasn't up to par was the calamari, which turned cold after two or three minutes, making it rubbery. The drinks were good - not overly strong and not "is there alcohol in this?" weak. Like Goldilocks, it was just right. The tiramasu was delicious, the hummus nice and garlicky and the pita bread was piping hot. The bands were all great, especially The Soul of John Black.

Don't base your decision to go to The Mint on old reviews. There has obviously been some personnel changes since last year. I would definitely go back. The only thing I would suggest for the owners is that they pick up the trash next to the building or invest in a good trash can, it would make it that much nicer.

Pros: Extremely nice staff
Cons: cold calamari, trash outside the building.
