Wonderful Church with a Very Pleasant Congregation!
This historic Lutheran church is located in the Near West Side Medical Center. I have been a member for a while and we are so pleased to have Pastor Harry Therwanger as our new pastor! He is such an enthusiastic minister! Our Divine Worship Services always are presented with practical messages to live by as Christians.

Pastor Therwanger also leads our Bible Study classes from a philosophical / theologian approach. Hence he presents the solid truth of knowledge that presents Lutheran beliefs in the reality from the Holy Bible.

We also have special programs practically every month. We are a diverse, friendly and welcoming congregation.

Sundays: Divine Worship Services at 11am
Wednesdays: Adult Bible Study at 6:30pm

One of Chicago's Friendliest!
Small, diverse congregation. Of all the chruches I have visited in Chicago, this has to be the most friendly so far. It is located near the Polk Street/Medical Center stop on the CTA Pink Line. Street parking is available along Ashland Avenue (both sides) in front of the chruch during Sunday services. Contrary to what other reviews have posted, the worship service no longer begins at 10:30 -- they now begin at 11:00. Interior of the church was recently restored and work is underway to replace the large stained glass window facing Ashland Avenue. It's a very pretty sanctuary. This congregation recently received a new pastor. It was my impression that they offer communion every Sunday. I don't believe in transubstantiation and the manner in which their pastor invited guests to join in communion left me with the impression that this belief was a prequisite for participation. In looking at the Missouri Synod web site I now understand that they also do not believe in transubstantiation. Even so, I went to the alter and received a blessing from the pastor. There is a portion of their worship service called "Peace of the Lord" where members of the congregation not only turn to greet one another, rather, it's more like a big mixer where everyone leaves their own pew and walks around the sanctuary greeting one another. Almost the entire service was carried out in a responsive reading format, and there is LOTS of singing. Not being used to this, I have to admit that it got a little tiresome having to stare down at the bulletin the whole service as required if one is to follow and participate in the service. Some coats and ties on the men, and some women dressed in their Sunday best, but most of the congregation wore casual street clothes. The Pastor's sermon was relaxed and conversational in tone. A Children's Sermon was also provided where the younger parishioners and some teenagers gathered in the front pews (so don't sit there). An uplifting experience!

Pros: Close to downtown Chicago, beautiful sanctuary, & best of all, very welcoming!
Cons: More singing than I prefer and the worship service lasted nearly two hours.

A Wonderful Church with a Welcoming Congregation
My entire family has been a member of First Immanuel Lutheran Church (FILC) since the mid-60's when Pastor Becker (emeritus) was the pastor. Most of the congregation lived in the medical center district, but with time, we moved into different parts of Chicago, but we still return to FILC every Sunday.

In the past 40 years we had only 2 pastors, Becker and Carrier. Today we are Calling our 3rd pastor. We are currently having a congregational election and we will soon know who will be our spirtual shepard.

We are in the final stages of rennovating FILC, through a program called P.A.I.N.T. which is being coordinated by our Music Director, George E. Manning, III. The santuary is not completed, but it is absolutely beautiful.

We have a wonderful music ministry led by George E. Manning, III. George and his family used to live in the parsonage, he has been our music director for about 30 years. George is an accomplished musician and is so very talented in the old classic German music as well as today's contemporary Gospel musical venue. Once a year people from throughout the country join us in December for Majesty. A long term Christmas beautiful performance.

Our Divine Worship service starts at 10:30am on Sundays. We follow the traditional Lutheran / Missouri Synod liturgy. After service, that month's Birthday Club provide food and refreshment for Christian fellowship.

In a few weeks we will be having Vacation Bible Study for one full and exciting week!

I am running our of space here, but I hope that anyone who reads this review will join us at our Sunday Divine Worship. We are about to welcome a new pastor so this is an especially exciting period in the history of First Immanuel Lutheran Church!

Please join us and may the Peace of the Lord be with you .... always.
